- Hippopotamus is the 3rd Largest land animal! 1st and 2nd are elephants and rhinos respectively!
- The name came from ancient Greek word with meaning “river horse”!
- Only 2 species of hippopotamus are there!
- The reproduction and childbirth both for hippopotamus occur in water.
- Their closest related creatures are cetaceans (whales, porpoises, etc.) from which they diverged about 55 million years ago.
- The plural for them is hippopotamuses normally but hippopotami can also be used!
- An open mouth signals that the hippo feels threatened.
- Hippos can be dangerous to humans! They commonly attack whether in boats or on land with no apparent provocation!
- A hippo can weigh over half a ton!
- Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in rivers and lakes to keep their massive bodies cool under the hot!
- They can stay submerged in water upto 5 mins without breathing!
